Give the Right to Vote to Noncitizens in NYC

The Humanist Party is working actively to reintroduce the Voting Rights Restoration Act. This legislation will grant the right to vote in local elections, to noncitizen residents in New York City.

The Voting Rights Restoration Act would enfranchise non-U.S. citizens who have resided legally in New York City for more than six months before the time of an election. Lawful residents include legal permanent residents (green card holders), those with spouse visas, and most other kinds of visas. Holders of tourist or other very short-term visas would not be allowed to vote.

Municipal voters would be allowed to vote in city-wide referenda and in primary, special, and general elections including the following offices:

  • Mayor
  • City Council Member
  • Borough President
  • Comptroller
  • Public Advocate
  • Judges

The New York City Board of Elections would create registration forms specifically for municipal voters. It would also create ballots only for municipal –not state or federal– elections.

Humanist Party participates in the World Social Forum with two workshops on disarmament

For another year, the International Humanist Party has returned to participate in the Madrid round of the World Social Forum. On this occasion, some members of this party led two workshops: “Nuclear disarmament: social and economic effects of military spending” and “Conclusions of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence”.

Madrid, 2010-01-31, The International Humanist Party conducted two workshops this weekend during the Xth World Social Forum in Madrid thereby taking part once again in the nearly 80 activities that were carried out on Friday and Saturday at Lope de Vega High School.

The Humanist Party workshops were conducted under the title “Nuclear disarmament: social and economic effects of military spending” and “Conclusions from the World March for Peace and Nonviolence”. In this way, both were linked to the recent conclusion of the World March which, for 90 days, traveled the five continents demanding the revision of arms race policies around the world.

Humanist representatives emphasized the importance of this forum as a meeting place for persons of different beliefs, united by the interest in searching for new methods for social transformation. The Humanist Party’s Nacho Martínez confirmed that “this forum’s value is evident; now, we must take what is being proposed to the street”.

The Madrid round of the World Social Forum, thereby, clocks up another year on an already traditional date on the communal anti-globalization movement’s calendar. On this occasion, Porto Alegre in Brazil was the city charged with hosting the group by means of a meeting in which some 35,000 people from 39 countries took part.

We Support the Same-sex Marriage Legislation

The Humanist Party in New York support the same-sex marriage legalization bills. The same-sex marriage is based, for us, on what is regarded as a universal human rights. It is the union between two people that love each other.
